The Curious Case of Wendy Williams: Guardianship, Freedom, and Media Appearances

Carol Marks

TALK TO ME, TEXT IT

Guardianships are supposed to protect vulnerable people, but what happens when the protected person insists they don't need protection? Wendy Williams is living this reality right now, and her fight for freedom has taken a dramatic turn with her recent media blitz.

The former queen of daytime television has been under a court-appointed guardianship since May 2022, after Wells Fargo flagged suspicious activity in her accounts and suggested she was being financially exploited. Instead of pursuing the alleged exploiters, the system placed Williams herself under restrictions. Now she's fighting back with everything she has, including dropping notes from the fifth floor of her assisted living facility and calling into multiple TV shows to plead her case.

"How dare they say I have incapacitation?" Williams fumed during recent appearances on The View and Breakfast Club. She revealed she recently underwent an independent psychiatric evaluation, which she claims she "passed with flying colors." Her situation highlights the troubling power imbalance that can exist in guardianship arrangements, where even celebrities with resources can struggle to regain their autonomy once it's been legally restricted.

We dive deep into Williams' guardianship battle, examining the circumstances that led to her current situation and what it might take for her to regain control of her life and finances. Whether you're a longtime Wendy fan or simply concerned about rights and autonomy, this episode raises important questions about the systems meant to protect vulnerable people. Speaker 1:

My obsession with Wendy Williams. Where did it come from? I think it came from actually Giphy's or Gifts or whatever you call them. Okay, hold on. First of all, I feel better. I had to leave work early yesterday, not because I was sick, but I had a scheduled appointment and I had planned. The plan was to return. I just had to go get blood work. The plan was to return to work Only when I got here in the morning.

Speaker 1:

When I woke up for actually yesterday, I'm sorry, the day before it started, when I was working out, I was rowing in the garage. You know, when you row and you work out you breathe kind of hard. I had the garage door all the way open instead of just partially open, and I think with my heavy breathing I must have taken in some like pollen or something because all of a sudden during my workout, my nose I felt like I had to sneeze constantly while I was working out and my nose started running and it continued to run for like 24 hours straight. I got to work the next morning, yesterday, and I went through a whole box of tissues at my desk in like two hours. It just I was not congested at all, it just kept running, running, running, running, running, running and finally it's like when I went to left my appointment to get my blood work, I was like I'm just going to go home and that's what I did.

Speaker 1:

Okay, I know I'm speaking way too fast and too loud. All right, let me tone it down, all right. My obsession I feel better. My obsession with Wendy Williams I think again it started with because I have never watched a full episode of her show ever. I've watched clips and snippets and what I've seen and watched the little bit that I've watched. I like her take on things. I think she's larger than life. I think she's not afraid. She's had a good career. Think she's larger than life. I think she's not afraid. She's had a good career from what I've read, because I did read a little bit more about her. But we're going to start here with a story from page six. She actually made it to the View yesterday. Wendy Williams fumes how dare they say I have? Oh my gosh, I can't talk. Talk in capacitation, I can't even say the word.

Speaker 1:

In a new interview with the view, wendy williams wants her guardian to get off her neck. The former daytime talk show host, uh, called into the view for a pre-taped interview. I thought she went on the view because they have pictures of her sitting at the desk Maybe that was from a long time ago Exclusively obtained by Page Six, in which she got candid about her current. I guess she called into a lot of different shows yesterday, but they have a picture of her sitting at the desk of the View with that horrid woman, sunny. But I guess she just called in. Anyway, we're moving on. I needed a breath of fresh air. I needed to see the doctor, so that's why I went to the hospital. Williams said Remember, I told you the other day she dropped a note out of her assisted living facility from the fifth floor in New York City.

Speaker 1:

The interview kicked off with Williams, who is 60, explaining her hospital visit and decision to get an independent psych test, which she says she passed with flying colors earlier this week. Williams revealed she was also there to get blood work done for her thyroid condition and it made clear it was my choice to get an independent evaluation on my incapacitation, which I don't have. She said how dare they say I have incapacitation? I can't say it. Why can't I say that word, incapacitation? And she says calling into the Breakfast Club Good Day, new York, and the View as she fights to be freed from her guardian, sabrina Morrissey.

Speaker 1:

Well, on Wednesday, page Six exclusively reported on her dinner date with her niece, alex Finney. Remember I talked about that yesterday too. She made it out and about. This article goes on. If you want to go finish reading that, it's out on my XFeedcom. But we are going to move on to the next one. Can Wendy Williams freely live her? Oh my gosh, can Wendy Williams freely leave her assisted living facility? Her guardianship explained. So bear with me, we're going to go over this too. I'm going to try to scan down to where. How long has Williams been in the guardianship?

Speaker 1:

A New York judge ordered Williams to be placed in a court-appointed legal guardianship in May 2022. A guardianship, which is referred to as a conservatorship in different states, is a legal arrangement in which a court gives a person or organization the legal right to make decisions for another person who is unable to make all or any certain decisions for themselves. Why was Williams placed in a guardianship? Here we go. In early 2022, williams Bank, wells Fargo put a freeze on her accounts due to suspicious activity. We are concerned about Williams' situation. Attorney David H Pikus wrote on behalf of the bank in a letter to New York Supreme Court judge. Supreme Court Just skipped all over. The regular judges Went to Supreme Court Arianne Bluth at the time claiming they believed she had been a victim of undue influence and financial exploitation. Well, instead of placing her in conservatorship, why don't you go get that person who you think is doing things illegal? Why don't you go after them? They're the crooks. Go after them. No, don't put Wendy in. I don't get this at all. Wells Fargo also recommended the guardianship in that same letter, stating via picas it is our hope that the guardianship part of the court will imminently appoint a temporary guardian or evaluator to review the situation and ensure that williams affairs are being properly handled. It looks to me like they just placed her into the criminal's hands for guardianship.

Speaker 1:

Who is Williams' legal guardian? Sabrina E Morrissey was appointed Williams' legal guardian by the court. According to her bio on her firm's website, she is a New York-based attorney who focuses on estate planning, administration and litigation and guardianship based attorney who focuses on estate planning, administration and litigation, and guardianship sabrina advocates for vulnerable new yorkers and their families as they struggle to provide appropriate care. Okay, blah, blah, blah. What illnesses has william been diagnosed with um.

Speaker 1:

You can go finish reading that. What, basically? That's the. That's the gist of the story. Wells Fargo took it upon themselves because they saw what they thought was weird activity from her account and they were afraid Wendy was being influenced by these people. Well, why don't you go arrest those people instead of putting her? See, I don't understand this at all. So that's a long article. I suggest you go read it. It's from page six. It's on my ex account and that's what we're going with today and tomorrow. I will talk about her biography, because she does have a pretty good biography and this is another reason why I like her. She um. Anyway, I'll read it tomorrow.

Speaker 1:

We'll go on part two, wendy Williams, tomorrow. Her background, all right, got to go. First question of the day. Okay, if you could own a famous piece of art, what would you want to have? The Mona Lisa, some kind of statue, some? I'm talking about old art. Now, I'm not, I'm not real, I'm not an art person, so I'm not sure. Any kind of piece of Van Gogh, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know what would you? But that's the question. I'm asking it anyway, even though I don't know the answer to it, I just say the Mona Lisa, because it's famous, right, I think I would like to own a famous piece of art, but what would I do with it? Why?
